Directorate for Dairy Development had no separate Directorate until February 1982. The activities were carried out by the Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Assam. However, considering the importance of all the developmental activities of Dairy in the state, the Government decided to create a new , separate Directorate. In January 1982, Directorate of Dairy Development came under the administrative control of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Assam. And in 1990, a separate Directorate of Dairy Development had been created. Subsequently, the Government notified it as a permanent department in 2004.
The Directorate of Dairy Development plays a pivotal role in strengthening the dairy sector by fostering awareness and capacity building among stakeholders. It facilitates exposure visits for farmers and departmental officers to enhance their knowledge and skills. The department actively promotes the formation of Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCSs), Milk Unions, and the Dairy Federation to streamline the dairy industry. Additionally, it focuses on developing essential infrastructure tailored to the needs of various stakeholders. Ensuring the quality and safety of dairy products, the department also conducts rigorous checks and inspections under FSSAI regulations.
